What Is a Seed Phrase? Definition & Example

A 12 or 24-word backup that regenerates every private key in a wallet — and grants complete control to anyone who has it.

A seed phrase (or recovery phrase) is an ordered list of 12 or 24 words that deterministically regenerates every private key in a wallet. It is not a password protecting an account; it is the account. Anyone holding those words has complete, irreversible control of the funds.

That equivalence is the whole security model, and it has two consequences. Lose the phrase and your funds are permanently inaccessible — no recovery process exists, no company can help. Expose the phrase and your funds will be taken, usually within minutes, by automated bots that scan for compromised phrases continuously.

The rules follow directly. Write it on paper or metal, never in a password manager, notes app, email, cloud drive or photo. Digital copies are the single most common cause of theft. Store copies in more than one physical location, because a fire or flood destroys funds just as effectively as a thief. Never type it anywhere except when restoring a wallet in an application you deliberately opened yourself.

That last point covers nearly every scam. No legitimate wallet, exchange, protocol, support agent or airdrop will ever ask for your seed phrase. Not to verify you, not to fix a problem, not to process a claim. Every request is theft, without exception. The most effective scams are patient, helpful and appear on the official-looking support channel you found through a search.

For meaningful amounts, use a hardware wallet where the phrase is generated on the device and never touches an internet-connected computer. See cold storage and the full guide on private keys and seed phrases.
